There are a number of things anyone can do to avoid being stung by one of the 5 most common stinging insects.

1. Avoid tampering with the nest, colony or hive of stinging insects. Be observant and avoid any location where you see numbers of stinging insects coming and going.

2. Don’t swat at a stinging insect or make rapid movements. Brush it away very slowly and gently.

3. Do not leave exposed out-of-doors any sugary liquids, rotting fruit or meat products that may attract stinging insects.

4. Avoid areas with fallen fruit on the ground.

5. Learn the appearance and habits of the most common stinging insects - this makes it easier to avoid their defensive reactions.

6. Avoid bright, flowery clothing and perfume. Wear light-colored clothing.

7. Always wear shoes outdoors to avoid being stung in the foot by an insect you have unintentionally trod on.

8. If attacked by several stinging insects, run. In most cases you will be able to outrun them, especially if you travel several hundred yards.

9. Wash sweat away but avoid scented soaps.
